It goes unsaid that studying for the DSEs is a process that is nothing short of stressful (If not, why is it that ‘dying’ can be find in the word ‘studying’?). Watching movies is not only a relaxing experience, it can also help you improve your listening abilities.
Here are five movie recommendations that can help you become a better listener, not just for the exam but also for life.
La La Land
This movie’s been quite the talk of the town lately. Not only has it received fourteen Academy Award nominations (tying with The Titanic for the record for most nominations by a single film), covers of its songs can be heard anywhere and everywhere. The romantic musical comedy- drama film focuses on the love story between a jazz musician and an aspiring actress, along with how they use different methods to achieve their dreams. It’s the perfect movie for your average romantic. Or any music lover, for that matter.

Hidden Figures
Hidden Figures has also been quite the popular choice among award shows as of late. The American biographical drama film tells the real- life story of several female African- American mathematicians at NASA. As Katherine G. Johnson (Taraji P. Henson), Dorothy Vaughan (Octavia Spencer) and Mary Jackson (Janelle Monáe) struggle with day- to- day obstacles regarding work, race and gender, some may be able to note that such prejudices may still resonate with the experiences many people have had even today.

Moana
Moana is an animated musical fantasy adventure film that tells the story of Moana, the daughter of the chief in a Polynesian tribe, as she goes on an adventure to reunite a mystical relic with a goddess. One of many things that differentiate this from any other Disney movie would be the fact that Moana has no love interest in this story. This is the perfect movie for your average feminist who’s looking for a strong female lead to look up to. Or if you’re someone seeking to reminisce over childhood through the means of animated films, you should also find this movie quite enjoyable.

Zootopia
Of course, when it comes to animation, it would be a sin not to mention Zootopia. The story is based around an anthropomorphized bunny named Judy as she fights to gain respect as a police officer all the while trying to solve an intriguing conspiracy with the companionship of Nick, a fox. Zootopia provides insight regarding societal prejudices and discrimination, while preaching the important lesson that no dream is too big, regardless of who you are. Because what matters is who you want to be.

The LEGO Batman Movie
Did you like the first Lego Movie? If you did, odds are that you would adore this one. Changes are brewing in Gotham City, and in order to combat the Joker’s new evil plan, Bruce Wayne must start working with others. Predictably enough, chaos ensues. This is a light- hearted comedy/ action movie that is the best solution for those who are seeking for ways to destress.
