Music from the Grammy Awards

The Grammy is an award presented yearly to recognize the best of the best in the English-language music industry. If you’re a music lover looking for a way to improve your English, rest assured you’ll have a lot of fun listening through this list of songs that are all Grammy nominees.

1-800-273-8255: Logic Featuring Alessia Cara & Khalid

‘What’s the day without a little night?/ I’m just tryna shed a little light/ It can be hard/ It can be so hard/ But you gotta live right now/ You got everything to give right now...’

1-800-273-8255 is the number for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline in the United States. Logic uses both the title and the content of the song to promote the idea that suicide is never an answer to any problem. The subject matter may be dark but the song is inspiring and great for anyone who’s been having a bad time lately.

Million Reasons: Lady Gaga

‘I’ve got a hundred million reasons to walk away/ But baby, I just need one good one to stay...’

‘Million Reasons’ is a country-pop love song that just about everyone loves. The song is catchy and the sentiment is familiar for anyone who’s been through heartbreak but is hesitant to let go of their previous relationship. It’s the kind of song you sing along to while sobbing under your covers at night, partially because of what you’re going through, partially because Lady Gaga’s singing voice is just so so good.

Stay: Zedd Featuring Alessia Cara

‘All you have to do is stay a minute/ Just take your time/ The clock is ticking, so stay...’

Coincidentally enough, ‘Stay’ is quite the perfect response to Lady Gaga’s ‘Million Reasons’. It’s a sweet, catchy song, sung by someone who wants someone they’re romantically interested in to stay for a while longer with them. It’s a song that celebrates youthfulness while riding on an undercurrent of sadness, as the singer knows full well that the other person intends on leaving at some point anyways.

Something Just Like This: The Chainsmokers and Coldplay

‘I’m not looking for somebody/ With some superhuman gifts/ Some superhero/ Some fairytale bliss/ Just something I can turn to/ Somebody I can kiss/ I want something just like this...’

Now that we’ve been through two sad love songs, let’s listen to one happy one! ‘Something Just Like This’ is a song about how there’s no need for a relationship to be superhumanly perfect, that lovers can just be content with how they are. It’s quite wholesome and the tune is catchy enough for you to be humming it until the end of time after listening to it once.

Thunder: Imagine Dragons

‘Not a yes sir, not a follower/ Fit the box, fit the mold/ Have a seat in the foyer, take a number/ I was lightning before the thunder’

‘Thunder’ is THE song for ambitious people, who hope to achieve the most in the world in whatever way they can. It’s the kind of uplifting song you can listen to while swaggering down the street, feeling like you’re on top of the world. If you’re looking for a pick-me-up, or a song to give you motivation to start working on past papers, this would be a pretty good choice.
