If you’re looking to improve your English or find out more about Western culture in a relaxing way, there’s no better way to do so than to watch some movies or television shows. And if you’re looking for a place to start, why not check out the winners of Golden Globes 2018, an annual prize ceremony that honors the best of the best in film and television? This article reviews a list of Golden Globe winners of year 2018- how many of these movies and TV shows have you watched so far, and which ones do you intend on watching in the near future?

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (Best Motion Picture- Drama)

When your daughter is killed and local policemen are unable to find the person who killed her, what do you do? Do you grieve? Move to someplace else? Try to continue living the life you once led? Mildred Hayes, the main character of the movie, decides to rent three billboards to call public attention to the unsolved crime. Her actions polarize the community and sets the premise for a thoroughly intriguing and entertaining dark comedy. This movie is unfortunately R-rated for violence, language and some sexual content so you might want to avoid it unless you’re one of our older readers.

Lady Bird (Best Motion Picture-Musical or Comedy)

Coming-of-age is no easy business. As teenagers, all of us struggle to some extent to define our relationships with our family, friends and ourselves. Lady Bird is a story about a high-school senior (in Hong Kong terms, a Form 6 student) and her turbulent relationship with her mother. It’s a largely relatable piece and many have struggled to leave theatres with dry eyes. Lady Bird has yet to be released in Hong Kong. But considering its critical success, the movie will most likely air later this year, so you might want to keep an eye out for it.

Coco (Best Motion Picture- Animated)

In order to achieve their dreams, people are sometimes advised to ‘go to the ends of the earth’ in order to find the means to success. This story takes it somewhat literally. Miguel Rivera, our 12-year-old protagonist, is accidentally transported to the land of the dead. During his time there, he seeks the help of his deceased musician great-great-grandfather to help him get back to the world of the living without having to give up his musical pursuits. The concept of the film itself is based on the Mexican holiday of the Day of the Dead, so this movie is a great way for you to learn more about Mexico while enjoying the wonderful animations Pixar never fails to deliver.

Stranger Things (Nominee for Best Television Series- Drama)

Do you have a stomach for horror and mystery? Do you like scary mythical creatures that can keep you up at night? If so, Stranger Things is the show for you. The TV show is set in the fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana. It’s the 1980s and a little boy named Will Byers has gone missing. His friends set off to find him while a variety of supernatural occurrences continuously plague the town. The series has been an internet sensation since it aired and if you haven’t watched it yet, you’re missing out. Both seasons are available on Netflix right now, so what are you waiting for?
