StartFragmentThe semifinals for the Standard Chartered Public Speaking Competition is coming up this Saturday. As it goes, all competitors will be expected to deliver a 3- minute speech after 15 minutes of preparation time. So quite a number of you guys must be wondering- what can I do to prepare myself for Saturday? Well, here are some rules to help you out.

1. Practicing the art of impromptu

Just because it’s an impromptu doesn’t mean that you don’t have to do anything beforehand - Practice impromptu speaking before the contest!

Random word generators are great topic providers for impromptu speeches. After receiving your practice topic, try going through the actual preparation and delivery process. By familiarizing yourself with the entire process, you will be able to preemptively figure out how much time you could allocate to different parts of speech- planning.

2. Read up! You never know what might turn out to be useful.

Try filling your mind with a little something before the competition, be it Harry Potter, the Economist or the National Geographic. You never know what random fact may suddenly become useful when you’re thinking of what to say.

3. Do some research!

What do other public speakers normally cover in impromptu speeches? How do they last for three whole minutes or more? The internet is a brilliant resource for everything, and watching winning impromptu speeches from other competitions in other countries just might be able to give you a better idea as to what the judges may be looking for.

4. Remember to sleep early the night before the competition!

It’s scientifically proven that the more you sleep, the better your brain works. So do sleep early the night before to make sure that you will be able to attain peak performance the day after!

Good luck!
